My Favorite Ways to Make Our Home Feel Like Summer
Summer doesn’t have to be loud or chaotic to feel magical. Around here, we’re not chasing Pinterest-perfect decor or overstuffed schedules.
We’re slowing down, soaking up sunlight, and creating simple traditions that make home feel like a refuge.
Here are a few of my favorite ways to make our home feel like summer—peaceful, playful, and full of presence.
1. Bring in the Light
I open the curtains early, let the morning light flood in, and keep the lights off as long as I can. Natural light just changes the mood—it makes everything feel slower and softer.
2. Switch to Seasonal Scents
I rotate candles and essential oils to lighter, citrusy blends—think lemon, lavender, or eucalyptus. Something about the smell of summer helps anchor us to the moment.
3. Keep a Simple Summer Basket
I put together a little basket for the kids with chalk, bubbles, board books, and a few outdoor toys. It encourages spontaneous play and makes time outside easy to start.
4. Use Lighter Layers
We swap out heavy blankets and dark pillow covers for lighter, breezier textures. Even just folding up a quilt at the foot of the bed can make a room feel fresh again.
5. Prep the Porch or Patio
Whether it’s a full setup or just a comfy chair and string lights, I make space outside for sipping coffee, reading books, or chatting with my husband after the kids are in bed.
6. Keep a Summer Playlist Going
Music is such a vibe setter! I keep a cozy summer playlist with worship, acoustic covers, and lighthearted tunes that help shift the atmosphere while we clean, cook, or play.
7. Create Simple Summer Rituals
We do things like popsicles on the porch, barefoot backyard walks, or Friday night homemade pizza—nothing fancy, but deeply grounding for our family rhythm.
8. Incorporate Nature Inside
Fresh flowers from the yard or herbs on the windowsill instantly make our kitchen feel more alive. Sometimes we even bring in leaves or sticks my kids find outside.
The point of this post? You don’t need a big budget or endless free time to create a home that feels like summer. Just a few small touches, layered with intention and grace, can turn your home into a place of peace and joy—right in the middle of your real, beautiful life.
Cheers,
