The Rhythms That Keep Me Sane in a Full Season
Life doesn’t slow down just because we want it to.
In some seasons, it feels like we’re just keeping our heads above water—juggling work and motherhood, managing a home, holding space for big emotions, and trying not to lose ourselves in the swirl of it all.
What’s saved me isn’t a color-coded schedule or a picture-perfect routine.
It’s rhythms.
Gentle anchors that bring steadiness, even when everything else is stretching and shifting.
Here are a few of mine.
☕ 1. Morning Coffee—Alone or with Little Hands Nearby
I don’t always get a quiet morning. But I do get coffee. Whether I’m curled up with a journal or sitting on the floor surrounded by blocks, that warm mug is a little moment of intention.
It says, this day matters—even if it’s messy.
📖 2. Quiet Time That Fits the Season
Some days it’s 30 minutes with my Bible and journal. Other days it’s a worship song playing while I fold laundry. I’ve stopped trying to make it look a certain way.
The goal is connection, not perfection.
🗓️ 3. Sunday Resets
We pick up the house. I glance at the calendar. We talk through the week ahead.
There’s something so grounding about starting the week with a bit of order—even if Monday unravels it all by 10 a.m.
✍️ 4. Planning Days (That Are Also Grace Days)
Usually on Monday or Friday, I carve out space to reflect and regroup. I brain-dump everything swirling around in my head—work stuff, grocery lists, dreams I’m not ready to say out loud yet.
It helps me move forward with a little more clarity, and a lot less stress.
🚶♀️ 5. Family Walks After Dinner
Not every night, but often enough to feel like a ritual. We take the kids around the neighborhood—no phones, no rush. Just conversation, dandelions, and the reminder that presence is enough.
🕯️ 6. An Evening Wind-Down
After the kids are in bed, I light a candle, tidy something small, and let myself breathe. I might write, read, or do absolutely nothing. But I try not to just scroll myself into sleep.
Because how I end the day… matters too.
What I’ve Learned
Rhythms don’t demand performance.
They hold space for you—as you are.
They remind you of what’s important, even when the world feels like it’s spinning too fast.
So if you’re in a season that feels full or heavy, I hope this gives you permission to let go of the pressure for perfect routines.
You don’t need rigid structure to find peace—you just need a few simple rhythms that remind you who you are and Whose you are.
Cheers,
Jenna Elrod
